Professional Development

PSVI and its partners provide a range of professional development to the full range of the entire range of administration, faculty and staff, as well as community stakeholders who work with and in schools.

The following core PD sessions support the adults in schools learn about, contribute to and practice the fundamentals of positive school climate transformation and bias-based bullying prevention and intervention.

Bias-Based Bullying Prevention

Bullying behavior is characterized by an imbalance of power. With bias-based bullying, such power imbalances involve bias toward personal characteristics or identities, such as race, religion, sexual orientation, etc. Although this type of bullying is associated with far worse outcomes for students, few prevention programs specifically address bias. Therefore, the purpose of this session is threefold: to support school stakeholders in understanding how bias impacts bullying behaviors, to recognize bias-based bullying, and to do action planning using classroom activities and other tools.

Social and Emotional Learning and Development (SELD)

SEL competencies enable children and adults to establish positive relationships by: recognizing and managing their own perceptions and reactions, demonstrating concern for others, making responsible decisions, and handling challenging situations constructively. This session focuses on helping school communities develop SEL-competent students through safe, supportive, and culturally-appropriate ways. This is accomplished by supporting stakeholders to understand the importance of social and emotional learning, and by providing them with tools and strategies to support their own learning and practice of SEL in schools.

Youth Engagement and Leadership

Early adolescence provides both challenges as well as opportunities for engaging students in leadership activities and school climate transformation. This session considers developmental principles and transitions that relate to youth engagement and leadership. Objectives include: supporting school stakeholders to understand the fundamentals of developmental transitions and their impact on youth engagement in school, identifying developmentally appropriate ways to support youth leadership initiatives in school, and to create school-specific action plans for creating successful youth-adult partnerships.
